IITs' PhD jinx: BTechs command higher pay

Foreign universities that would come scouting for young teachers to the Indian Institutes of Technology were conspicuously missing this recruitment season. But a range of private and deemed Indian universities from across the country did land up offering hardly attractive pay scales defined under the Sixth Pay Commission.

When they were pitted against the big guns-the consulting and finance offers-the IITs realized that the PhD jinx continues to haunt them. Every tech school recorded a higher average salary figure for their BTechs as compared to their PhD fellows, most of who joined research labs or signed up for teaching positions.

"It's a trend that continues. The average salary on campus is Rs 7 lakh, but the average salary for PhD candidates is less than that of the BTechs," said an IIT Bombay official. The scenario is same on every campus. The slump in the average salary for PhDs also aggravated as universities from West Asia that came shopping for faculty did not turn up this year.

In the last two years, Alfaisal University, Saudi Arabia (which offered an annual compensation to the tune of Rs 19 lakh apart from housing and other facilities), Texas A&M University, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, were among the education providers that visited IITs and paid salaries comparable to industry. This year, most IITs saw a desi crowd as institutes like ICFAI, SRM University, Tamil Nadu; Saroj Education Group, Lovely Professional University, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge, Vigyan University, K L University and Manipal University took a handful of students.

Every IIT saw a fall in students signing up for teaching posts. At IIT-Kanpur, 45 students joined educational institutes last year; this time around the number stood at 32, said Ramkumar Janakarajan, placement head. Annual compensation remained almost the same as last year. Most of the universities offered between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 6 lakh a year.

IIT-Kharagpur's placement head S K Srivastava said 67 master's students and 15 PhD candidates took up teaching jobs this year. "The number was higher last year when more educational institutes had visited the campus." But several research firms, Srivastava added, had offered better salaries to PhD students this year.

IIT-Delhi's placement head Kushal Sen said it probably wasn't correct to compare the salaries of BTechs, MTechs and PhDs as they all took up varied job profiles.

"The salary that an MTech student gets from a core engineering firm cannot match the package that a consulting firm would offer a BTech."

Sure, but the placements again drove home the point that the BTechs at IITs managed to grab the best deals. In 2005-06, Rangan Banerjee and Vinayak Muley, in their report on engineering education in India had mentioned this irony that exists only on Indian campuses.

"The average MTech and PhD salary is lower than the average BTech salary in India. But the ratio of average starting salary of graduates to masters and doctorates for MIT, USA and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, USA shows that the average masters' salary is 22-26% higher than the bachelors'; the doctorates' salary is 45-58% higher than the bachelors'."

SRCC Misses UGC's Excellence Tag

Thursday, July 28, 2011

High-end infrastructure, lucrative campus placements and also the startling 100% cutoff - with all these, Shri Ram College of Commerce appears to be one of the best places to be. However, the UGC has turned down its request to be labelled as a 'college with potential for excellence (CPE)'.

SRCC, which had applied to the University Grants Commission (UGC) two years ago for the CPE status, came to know about the rejection only last week.

UGC awards the CPE status to a college that has achieved high standards of teaching and research and has brought in innovation. Following the status, the UGC grants Rs 1.5 crore to help the college improve and strengthen its infrastructure and attain higher academic standards.

Sri Venkateswara College and Gargi College already enjoy the CPE status in Delhi University; SRCC missed it for the lack of an accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

SRCC principal P C Jain said: "We recently came to know that our application was not accepted. We still haven't got anything in written from UGC. Once we receive an official letter, we may write to them to make the procedure and the criteria more broadbased."

To award the CPE status, UGC already looks for transparency in admissions, consistent academic improvement, introduction of innovation in curriculum, strengthening of laboratories, improvement of college library, use of IT and current technologies in academic and administrative activities, students' performance, participation in sports and other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities by students, and improvement of tutorial system.

However, according to UGC, an accreditation from NAAC has become necessary to qualify for CPE since the Eleventh Plan period. "So going by this, none of the colleges in Delhi University can now get the CPE status. A college should have got at least three stars or a B grade to be eligible to apply for CPE. It's a very important scheme of UGC," said a senior UGC official. The other two colleges were awarded this status in 2004-05 during the Tenth Plan period.

The UGC chairperson, Professor Ved Prakash, said: "The rejection of application should not be seen as a reflection of the quality of the institution. Such a status cannot be granted also when the quota of a state is already full."

According to the scheme, only 6% of colleges in a state can be awarded this status. There are 74 colleges funded by UGC and other government agencies under Section XII B of the UGC Act. UGC had awarded the CPE status and funds to 97 colleges in the country in 2004-05. However, the commission had planned to award the same status to 100 new colleges in the Eleventh Plan.

Court Stays Ranking of Engineering Colleges under Anna University

The Madras high court on Tuesday stayed an order by a single judge of the court directing Anna University of Technology (AUT) to publish an academic ranking of all affiliated engineering colleges to help students make an informed choice.

AUT Chennai and Coimbatore have already ranked colleges under them based on academic indicators. The latest order will apply to the AUTs in Trichy and Tirunelveli. However, this is an interim stay.

The stay order was given by a division bench of Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and M Venugopal on a petition filed by the Association of Management of Coimbatore Anna University Affiliated Colleges. Submitting that the single-judge order passed on July 18 had"seriously affected and jeopardised" the members of the association, the plea filed by the Association said institutions could not be ranked for the purpose of admission on the basis of academic performance of students in the previous year alone.

"Academic performance may be the outcome of various factors. This fact alone cannot be made the basis to rank the excellence of an institution. At any rate, there is no right for the first respondent—N Ramprasanth—to ask for the same nor a duty of the universities to publish the same, much less make it public," the petition said.

The petition also sought to avert"further damage" as some engineerig colleges were trying to take advantage of the ranking list already published by AUT, Coimbatore, in their advertisements.

The rankings released by AUT in accordance with the earlier directions of the single judge, classified colleges based on three parameters.

These were pass percentage of first year students in 2010-11, total number of answer papers versus those in which pass marks were granted, and year of establishment versus pass percentage.

Anna University Ranks Engineering Colleges on Exam Score

Anna University of Technology (AUT), Chennai, on Thursday ranked self-financing engineering colleges affiliated to it based on the academic performance of first-year students in 2010-11 . RMD Engineering College has been ranked number one.

Madras high court had directed Anna University of Technology to rank affiliated colleges by July 26. The order was given on a petition by N Ramprasanth, a first generation learner, who said such a list would help engineering aspirants to choose a good college through the single window counselling system.

AUT has branches in Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli. Only AUT-Chennai has put out the list so far.

"We have given lists that rank colleges based on pass percentage taking into account number of students who appeared for the exam as well as pass percentage based on the number of answer scripts evaluated," said director of corporate relations at AUT-Chennai S Selvakumar.

Cut-offs rise 1-2%, but Top Colleges Cross 95% Mark

First the good news: FYJC general merit list cut-offs for science and commerce streams-announced on Friday-have gone up only marginally by a percent or two when compared to last year. On the other hand, cut-offs to top colleges like Ruia, Ruparel and Sathaye colleges for the science stream have crossed the 95% mark, making it difficult for even 90% scorers to get a seat. For instance, the science cut-off at Ruia College in Matunga was a high 95.09%, while the entry level for Ruparel College in the same stream was 95.63%. Cut-offs for commerce, too, touched 90%.

The lists were announced ahead of the scheduled time, which was 5pm. Around 3.30pm, students could see their allotment online.

With the unusually high number of top scorers across all three boards, colleges were expecting very high cut-offs this year. Shobhana Vasudevan, principal of Podar College, Matunga, said, "Even though we were expecting the cut-offs to be exceptionally high, it is only marginally higher than last year."

The first general merit list evoked a mixed response from parents and students. While those who scored 95% and above in their board exams were able to get a seat in a college of their choice, the majority is now waiting for the betterment option in the hope that they will be allocated a seat in their preferred colleges.

Many top-rung city colleges saw anxious parents and students awaiting allotment lists on Friday.

Mansi Sheth, who scored 92.2% in the SSC board exam, was ecstatic when she saw that she had been awarded a seat in the college of her choice. " I have been allotted a Commerce seat at H R College, Churchgate, which was my first preference," she said. But for Kirtana Shetty-who scored only 2% less than Sheth in the ICSE board exam-Friday's list was a bitter disappointment. "I got a seat in a commerce college which was seventh in my preference list. I hope the betterment option brings me some good luck," said Shetty.

Several colleges complained that more than half seats are vacant even after the first allotment. T A Shiware, principal of KPB Hinduja College at Charni Road, said: "We have around 684 seats in the aided commerce section and only 279 students have been allotted seats in our college. Normally most of the seats are taken in the first round itself."

An official from the deputy director's office said, "All seats will be filled by the second round. There is a possibility that not many students have opted for some colleges, which would explain why some colleges have seats that have not been allotted yet."

High 90% Fetches Seats in Top Pune Colleges

PUNE: The cut-off percentage for admission to standard XI at prominent junior colleges in the city and neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad have gone up marginally this year keeping with the trend that was set last year following the introduction of the Best-5 policy.

The policy allows the state board students to calculate their standard X aggregate score, based on marks in the best five out of total six subjects. Last year, the cut-off (percentage point) where admission to a given college is closed, went up by 3% to 4%. It showed marginal improvement of 1% to 2%, this year.

Laxmanrao Apte Junior College was once again among the sought-after colleges, recording the highest 97.27% cut-off for science stream __ a 0.91% improvement over last year's cut-off of 96.36%. In 2009, admissions at Apte college closed at 93.84%.

The next best science stream cut-off, at 94.55%, was shared by Deccan Education Society's (DES) Fergusson College, Pune and Jaihind College, Pimpri. Last year, science admissions at Fergusson College closed at 94.20% while the Jaihind College has ended up with the same cut-off that it had registered in 2010.

In the arts stream, Fergusson College maintained its lead status with admissions closing at 90%, up by 2% over last year's 88%. Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce recorded the second best cut-off at 85.45%, a 19.27% improvement over last year's cut-off of 66.18%.

The DES' Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) remains the most sought-after college for commerce stream with admissions closing at 93.09%, up by 1.09% over last year 92%. The next best cut-off for commerce was 84.36% recorded by the Symbiosis College.

In all, 46,545 seats have been allotted in the Round 1 of the standard XI CAP, the merit list for which was released on Monday by deputy director (education) Sunil Magar, who heads the multi-member CAP committee. "All students, who applied through the CAP, have been allotted a seat. This includes 2,949 students from CBSE, ICSE and other non-SSC boards," Magar said.

The Std XI classes will commence from August 8 instead of the previously announced date of August 4. "The delay is mainly due to the issues relating to the CBSE students," he said. Last year, the legal tussle over the Best-5 policy had impacted the admission schedule and the classes finally started on August 18. "This year, we are starting 10 days earlier than last year despite the delay caused by CBSE issues," Magar said.

In all,46,545 seats have been allotted in the Round 1 of the standard XI CAP,the merit list for which was released on Monday by deputy director (education) Sunil Magar, who heads the multi-member CAP committee. All students, who applied through the CAP,have been allotted a seat. This includes 2,949 students from CBSE,ICSE and other non-SSC boards, Magar said.

The classes will commence from August 8 instead of the previously announced date of August 4.The delay is mainly due to the issues relating to the CBSE students, he said.Last year, the legal tussle over the Best-5 policy had impacted the admission schedule and the classes finally started on August 18.This year,we are starting 10 days earlier than last year despite the delay caused by CBSE issues, Magar said.

The CAP panel had declared an overall admission capacity of 63,680 (inclusive of the 4,875 bifocal science seats) while it received 54,898 admission pleas. The round 1 allotment of 46,545 prima facie indicates a difference of 17,135 seats between the admission capacity and actual allotment. The difference cannot be construed as vacant seats, Magar insisted.

Of the 54,898 forms received, the figure of 46,545 for the round 1 seat allotment was worked out after elimination of dual pleas. For instance,2,269 candidates had applied for science as well as commerce stream seats and another 98 applied for science as well as arts stream seats.Yet another 505 students applied for science as well as commerce (Marathi) stream seats. Many applicants also moved to the post-SSC diploma courses, he said.

The final position vis-a-vis vacancies will be clear only after the quota seats such as the 5% available to college managements;20% available to junior colleges attached to secondary schools;and 50% available to colleges run by minority institutions, are accounted for at the end of the CAP process by August 8, he added.
Last year, the CAP panel had reported 10,268 vacant seats at the end of the admission process. The number of junior colleges then was 146 as against 160 this year.

Of the total round 1 allotment,22,671 seats went to the science stream for which the CAP panel had declared an admission capacity of 20,965 seats. The excess applicants were accommodated by allowing the junior colleges to increase their science student intake by 10% to 20% of the existing intake, Magar said.

For commerce stream (English as well as Marathi medium),21,634 admissions have been effected as against the capacity of 26,380 seats.Similarly,2,240 admissions have been effected for arts stream, against a capacity of 11,460 seats. The CAP panel authorities sounded sure that the commerce seats will eventually be filled by the end of the admission process in August. However, arts remains a problem area, they admitted.

Fergusson College principal R G Pardeshi, executive president of CAP,vice-principal Rekha Palshikar, assistant director (education) P P Sable,CAP panel members Jagdish Chinchore and M D Lawrence were present.

One National Medical Entrance Test for Medical Admissions from 2012 in Andhra Pradesh

Starting 2012, students from the state will have to appear for just one national level entrance test for admission to undergraduate and post-graduate medical colleges. Contrary to its earlier decision to stick to Eamcet (MBBS) and PG entrance tests conducted by NTR University of Medical Sciences for these admissions, the state health and medical education department has written to the Medical Council of India giving its consent to participate in the national-level common entrance tests from 2012.

While the MCI had announced its decision to conduct a common pre-medical test for MBBS courses about six months ago, it made public the decision to conduct a similar entrance test for admission to post-graduate and super-specialty courses on July 24. The state government sent its letter of consent to the MCI on July 21 even before the formal announcement of the PG medical test was made.

Officials said that the government finally expressed its desire to take part in the national-level entrance examination as the health ministry agreed to its demand for complying with the state-specific admission rules. The state government follows a reservation policy which is different from that of other states, especially in the case of OBCs. The common entrance test will just be a qualifying examination and it will not decide the reservation policy of the state, officials said.

The senior teaching doctors and officials of NTR Health University have welcomed the MCI decision and the state government's move to be part of the national entrance test. "The MCI decision to introduce common entrance test for PG and super-specialty courses is just one among the many changes that are on the way. The country's medical education is going the US way. Andhra Pradesh has taken the right decision in agreeing to be part of the project," said Dr A Y Chary, dean, V R K Medical College for Women and former director of medical education.

Eamcet coaching centre experts in the state said that the MCI should release the syllabus for the test soon so that students can prepare well for the examination. "Till recently students were made to write about 17 PG entrance tests and over six MBBS entrance tests. The state's decision to participate in the national-level entrance test will be helpful for students," said Jaganmohan Rao, a medical entrance expert from the city.

High 90% Fetches Seats in Top Pune Colleges

The cut-off percentage for admission to standard XI at prominent junior colleges in the city and neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad have gone up marginally this year keeping with the trend that was set last year following the introduction of the Best-5 policy.

"The difference cannot be construed as vacant seats," Magar insisted.

He pointed out, "Of the 54,898 forms received, the figure of 46,545 for the round 1 seat allotment was worked out after elimination of dual pleas. For instance, 2,269 candidates had applied for science as well as commerce stream seats and another 98 applied for science as well as arts stream seats. Yet another 505 students applied for science as well as commerce (Marathi) stream seats. A significant number of applicants also moved to the post-SSC diploma courses."

"The final position vis-a-vis vacancies will be clear only after the quota seats such as the 5% available to college managements; 20% available to junior colleges attached to secondary schools; and 50% available to colleges run by minority institutions, are accounted for at the end of the CAP process by August 8," he said.

Last year, the CAP panel had reported 10,268 vacant seats at the end of the admission process. The number of junior colleges then was 146 as against 160 this year.

Of the total round 1 allotment, 22,671 seats went to the science stream for which the CAP panel had declared an admission capacity of 20,965 seats. "The excess applicants were accommodated by allowing the junior colleges to increase their science student intake by 10% to 20% of the existing intake," Magar said.

For commerce stream (English as well as Marathi medium), 21,634 admissions have been effected as against the capacity of 26,380 seats. Similarly, 2,240 admissions have been effected for arts stream, against a capacity of 11,460 seats. The CAP panel authorities sounded sure that the commerce seats will eventually be filled by the end of the admission process in the second week of August. However, arts remains a problem area, they admitted.

Fergusson College principal R G Pardeshi, who is executive president of CAP, vice-principal Rekha Palshikar, assistant director (education) P P Sable, senior CAP panel members Jagdish Chinchore and M D Lawrence were present.

Science Cut-offs touch 96.18%, Commerce Cut Off at 89.20% in Nagpur

Even though the SSC results dipped, the cut-offs at city colleges for science and commerce rose marginally. According to sources in the education department, admissions for science closed at 96.18% at Ambedkar College. This is higher than the cut-off of 94.40% at the same institute last year.

Sources added that admissions at Shivaji Science College closed at 93.46%, which is slightly lower than the 94.55% cut-off it achieved last year. Commerce faculty cut-off touched 89.20% at Ambedkar College, again slightly higher than last year's close of 87.09%.

The centralized admission committee (CAC) will be officially declaring the Std XI selection list for science and commerce faculty on Tuesday. The list will be available on the CAC web site (www.dydenagpur.org and www.cacstcxingp.org) from 8am. It will be displayed at every participating college from 11am.

There are apprehensions that had CBSE's school-evaluated students been given admission then the cutoffs could have probably risen to 97%. A senior faculty member at a top science college, said, "A girl from Centre Point School scored around 99% and there are many like her who did exceedingly well. But since they took the school-evaluated exam they are out of the reckoning for our colleges. I have no doubt that the cut-offs would have risen further if these 300-odd students were allowed in CAP."

Students are required to see which college they secured admission to and go directly to complete their admissions. There will be no centralized counselling process as it was for the bifocal faculty. Students should go to the respective colleges with all the necessary documents to avoid any inconvenience. Admissions will remain open till July 29 with a view to start the academic session by August second week.

There are 110 colleges in the city offering 7,140 seats through the centralized admission process (CAP) and almost a similar number through the management quota. For the commerce faculty there are 3,521 seats available through CAP and again a similar number is available through the management quota.

The city's top commerce college, GS College of Commerce had pulled out from CAP citing 'lack of quality students'.

Even though admissions will be done directly at the colleges, members of CAC would still be available at Dhanwate National College from 11am till 5pm. Students can contact CAC members if there are any queries or problems regarding admissions. A statement issued by CAC states that it will not entertain any complaints from students regarding colleges being far or that they did not mention a particular college in the form.

4 Simple Ways to Reduce Stress | Tip's to Reduce Mental Stress | Got Stress ?? Shake Off the Grind

Saturday, July 16, 2011

How many of us suffer from stress- whether it is from work, school, relationships, or a combination of the three? The answer is all of us! Life has way too many distractions and it can be very hard to get away from them. Too much stress can affect your life and health and fitness level in negative ways. If you learn how to cope with your stress you will live a better, healthier, and longer life. Don’t become the person that lets stress control every moment of their lives.

I made up a list of ways to reduce your stress levels. Follow the mentioned tip's which will lead you to the road of success

Exercise:
First on the list because I feel like exercise is a great stress reducer. How many of you feel great and worry free after a good workout. When you exercise you release chemicals in your brain called endorphins, which give you a happy feeling like you can do everything and there isn’t anything bad in the world. Start exercising once you finish reading this article. Recommendations: at least four days a week of 30 minutes to help reduce stress. Pick something that you enjoy doing; anything from walking, to swimming, to bike riding, to weight lifting.

Get a Massage:
People say it everyday, I need a massage. Well, go out and get one if you don’t have someone to give you one already. This can be excellent to reduce stress, is very relaxing and enjoyable. There are so many different types of massages available, so pick one that you like and can afford. If your funds are low use the massage chair at the mall! When you get a massage you are removing all of the tension out of your body and you will feel like a million bucks afterwards.

Meditation:
I personally use this one myself. Here is how: go to a quiet room alone, and empty your mind of everything! Focus on your body and breathing patterns then slowly isolate and contract various muscle groups for ten seconds then relax. This puts your muscles in a state of relaxation. Try doing this to soft sounds like slow classical music, the rainforest, or the beach. After you do this, I guarantee you will do this every week. Recommendation: mediate for at least 10 minutes a day.

Sleep:
Everyone feels great after a good nap or waking up after getting a full 8-10 hours of sleep. You need sleep and it’s very shocking that 85% of Americans are actually suffering from sleep deprivation. The less sleep you get, the more your body suffers. It is in sleep that your body heals itself, rejuvenates, and relaxes. If you start getting more sleep you will have less stress, have better focus, and better memory.

Delay in Gujarat University Engineering Results make the MBA, MCA Aspirants worry

Delayed results have MBA, MCA aspirants worried. Around 4,000 students seeking admission in MBA and MCA courses of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) fear losing their chances of securing admissions. This, because their final year results have not been declared yet. Most of these are engineering students.

While GTU has announced July 18 as the last date for submission of marksheets for admission in the MBA and MCA courses, the results of final year engineering examinations of Saurashtra University, South Gujarat University and Gujarat University have not been declared.

Earlier, GTU had decided July 7 as the last date of submission. However the date was postponed to July 18 as the results of the final year examination of the engineering students were delayed. But even as this extended deadline is approaching, the students are sweating bullets. One such student Ashish Patel said, "It is very unfortunate that the university officials are so irresponsible. I am afraid that I am going to lose the opportunity to take admission in MBA just because my final year results have been delayed."

According to the information given by GTU, out of the 14,482 students who have been shortlisted in the merit list for admission in MBA, a total of 2,309 students have still not submitted their marksheets.

HC Cancels Government Law College Admissions | Aspirants' Fate Hangs in Balance

Ayush Tandon and his parents, residents of Delhi, have been in Mumbai for the past week. Ayush was confident about getting a seat in the reputed Government Law College ( GLC) in Churchgate. However, with the Bombay high court directing the college to rework its admission process, they are in a quandary. Ayush's parents will now have to extend their stay indefinitely. Meanwhile, Ayush is anxious about securing a seat in the college as he cancelled his admissions elsewhere.

Ayush is not the only student who stands to lose his seat. Admissions given to 207 students in the college's five-year integrated law programme were cancelled on Thursday and the college was asked to make a fresh list combining all the streams. On Friday, more than 100 parents came to the college to check the status of their kids' admission. They met the principal in charge, Manju Molwane who assured them that the college would soon apply for an extra division to accommodate those affected. But no assurance was given on the time the new process would take.

Ayush's father Anil Tandon said, "We had come to the city after ensuring that a seat was available for our son. Now, our stay in the city is indefinitely extended. We are embroiled in a court case because of a goof-up in the admission process. We don't have any option but to appeal to the college to make seats available for our children."

Parents demanded that the students be given provisional admission and the extra division take in eligible students after the common merit list.

Richard Kayango (name changed) from Illinois, USA, who is the only foreigner among the students, is worried that his probationary visa would be forfeited if the admission is not confirmed soon. "Though I have a month, the foreign admissions' office asked me to fill the documents three weeks in advance. After I secured admission in the earlier process, I rented a flat in the city and paid the lease for 11 months. I am left with no choice now. Before seeking admission, I have flown to the city twice to first get the eligibility certificate from the Mumbai University. These trips have cost me a lot," he said. The student sought admission in the college as the college had a historical background with several famous alumni.

Senior professor Rachita Ratho said with the fresh merit list combining all the streams, the cut-off will be as high as 91%. "In that case, most of the arts' students who have secured admission will lose their seats," she said.

Molwane said the college would appeal to the government to speed up the approval of the additional division of 80 seats. "The process will not take time. We will ensure that all students are accommodated. We do not want to inconvenience anyone," said Molwane. Meanwhile, the students plan to write to the education department and the governor, seeking their intervention.
