Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA), constituted in 1962 under the Assam Act No. XXV of 1961, is vested with certain powers and duties that primarily focuses to develop and regulate Secondary Education in the state. To perform its duties and supervise the regulations of the Act a body is constituted with the consent of the state government. The board is responsible to prescribe syllabus and curriculum for the high schools, higher secondary schools and high madrassas.
Under the provisions of the Act, SEBA has the authority to conduct examinations, publish results of the examinations conducted, demand or receive fees, grant certificates to students who passed the exams, give certificates and scholarships etc. The board also suggests and prepares text books for secondary education and higher secondary education. Recognising schools and withdrawing such recognitions are also comes under its power and duties.
Secondary Board of Education Assam is responsible to advice the state government on matters pertaining to the development of physical and intellectual skills of the youths. To keep pace with the changing trend of education needs, it also organise conferences and seminars for both students and teachers. However, to ensure that the powers and functions of the board are exercised without failure, a committee is formed and its members are appointed or nominated under the acknowledgement of the state government.
