First impression is the best impression ; resume is your first entry into the organisation and is a platform which should highlight every achievement and relevant strength of yours.

Writing an effective and creative resume that gets results can be a daunting task. But if a few of the simple things are taken care of, your chances of being shortlisted for the interview enhance significantly.

As a prelude to a fruitful interview you should prepare a meaningful resume. Here are some valuable tips which will make it stand out amongst the many others. Resume has to have an optical appeal, it should be presented in a structured format and properly present the contents.

Optical Appeal
  • The paper should be A4 size.
  • The printout should be in font 12 (Arial or Times New Roman.)
  • Printout should be taken on a Laser Printer.
  • The overall optical appeal should be presentable.
Format
  • Resume should generally not exceed two pages. For Software professionals it may exceed the limit to highlight team size, duration of project and assignment contents.
  • Please note this is only an introduction to ensure an interview call and not your biography.
  • Avoid making tables in your resume as far as possible. Either write it in sentences or columns without a border.
  • Name must be the opening word of your resume. If the employer has to waste efforts to locate it, you have irritated him.
  • For experienced professionals; resume should highlight work experience followed by educational qualifications; simply because the company will be interested in your work experience as compared to your educational qualifications.
  • For freshers; resume should focus on the educational qualifications, and highlights therein, followed by summer training and academic projects.
  • Mention your academic and professional achievements separately towards the end.
Contents
  • Personal Details :
    • Specify date of birth and not age as on date.
    • State temporary address followed by permanent address.
    • To facilitate speedy connectivity write telephone numbers with STD codes, fax number and E mail id.
    • Mention best time to contact. In case of pp or c/o number write the name of the contact person.
    • List languages known; they play an important role in the selection process.
    • Avoid writing family details.
  • Educational Qualifications:
    • Bifurcate the qualifications into Educational and Professional along with specialisations.
    • Specify name of the degree, name of the university; year of passing for every qualification.
    • Marks obtained should be written if only particularly good.
  • Work Experience:
    • Should start with the present job, followed by others in reverse chronological order.
    • Name of the organisation, its location, designations held, month and year of joining and leaving must be specified for each employment.
    • Job profile or responsibilities handled play a key role in the selection process. List responsibilities point wise for quick comprehension.
    • Few sentences about the company profile and its product may be included.
  • Compensation:
    • Never mention your compensation. This could be a limiting factor unnecessarily. You can always talk it over at the personal interview or may discuss with your consultant.
    • If you are sending the resume to a placement consultancy do write cost to company in a covering note.
    • You may add expected salary and location preferences too, confidentially.

Important Tips
  • Here are a few of the tips that will be immensely beneficial for any candidate, irrespective of the industry or organization to applying to. These are some basic things that make a lasting impression.
  • Determine your job search objective prior to writing the resume and structure the content of your resume around that objective only. If you write your resume without having a clear objective in mind, it will come across as unfocused to those who read it.
  • You don’t need to go into detail about every accomplishment. Strive to be clear and concise. The purpose of your resume is to generate enough interest in you to have an employer contact you for an interview.
  • The language should be simple, the flow of language lucid and grammar absolutely correct. The format must be chosen carefully and consistency should be maintained through out. Use a font size no smaller than 10 point..
  • To improve the presentation and comprehension, use bulleted sentences. Resumes are read quickly ( a resume gets an attention of 30 sec. on an average) this bulleted sentence format makes it easier for someone to quickly scan your resume and still absorb it.
  • To add life to your resume use begin with action words like prepared, developed, monitored and presented.
  • Take the time to determine which bullets most strongly support your job search objective. Put those strong points first where they are more apt to be read.
  • Use the key words listed in the ad (Where the vacancy is advertised) and match them with the contents in your resume highlight your suitability for the job profile.
  • Use some technical jargon, specific to your industry. If there are terms that show your competence in a particular field use them in your resume.
  • Accent the positive and leave of negatives and irrelevant points. Lead with your strengths. Focus on the duties that support your objective.
  • Rather than going into depth in one area, use your resume to highlight your breadth of knowledge.
  • If you have reported to someone important such as a vice president or department manager, say so in your resume. Having reported to someone important causes the reader to infer that you are important.
  • Limit the length of your resume to 1-2 pages. Help the reader to scan your resume efficiently and effectively.
  • Since you are so close to your situation, it can be difficult for you to hit all your high points and clearly convey all your accomplishments. Have someone review your job search objective, your resume and listings of positions that interest you.
  • Use your resume to obtain an interview, not a job. Most prospective employers decide whether or not they want to interview you after reading the first few lines.

IIMC Calcutta Placements 2010-2012 | Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC)

The final placement for the batch of 2010-2012 of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) began on the February 20 and was done by the February 23, 2012. The placement process took place in slots and each slot lasted for two days.

By the end of slot 1 all 352 students who sat for placements had got job offers. The lateral placement process began in the first week of January and continued till the third week of February.

IIMC has re established itself as the 'Finance Campus' of the country with Finance comprising of the largest number of job offers (28.53%). The consulting companies followed next with 26.80% job offers. Following close enough were Sales and Marketing (22.48%) and General Management (8.93%).

The lateral placement process was organised for the students with work experience of at least 10 months. Around 208 out of 352 candidates were eligible for lateral placements and 130 job offers were made by 55 firms.

Firms like Accenture Management Consulting, Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Shell made offers through different profiles. Around 15 new firms along with Sovereign Wealth Fund too recruited enormously.

There were 95 pre placement offers from recruiters like UBS, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Barclays Capital, Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC Global Markets etc.

Even though the placement process was to take place in five days, every candidate was placed by the end of day four. IIMC claimed that giving candidates a wide array of choices to choose jobs in line with their interests was the most important concept of their placement process.

It gave unique opportunities to its students by opening before them new sectors like internet, gaming, and e-commerce among others. Recruiters like Microsoft recruited for its Redmond head office, Plinga, a German gaming company recruited for its Berlin office and there were other companies like Flipkart, Amazon, Naaptol, and Smile Group.

The batch of 2010- 2012 comprised of 34% freshers, and 66% students with work experience. Students with work experience were from different sectors like Systems (42%), Core Engineering (16%) Consulting (10%) Financial Services (13%) and others (19%).

The popular photo app, Instagram was bought for a cool $1 Billion by Facebook. Instagram is a popular service and solely exists on mobile phones. It has no revenue model but has a growing legion of users.

Facebook, which has recently filed for an IPO and hence is flush with cash and Instagram which was a rage with iPhone users has recently made the app available for Android.

The fact that Facebook is buying a company that makes no money for a cool billion dollars is going to start floating rumors that yet another dotcom bubble is around the corner.

Whats so special about Instagram?
Instagram is a big social success but on a platform on which no one has really suceeded. Instagram is a service that solely works on mobile phones. It allows people to skim through various filters and share these photos on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.

It is gaining a lot of popularity with younger audiences who usually are more comfortable sharing photos from their phones than a slightly older demographic.

Instagram is very personal, as in the photos shared on it are taken by people on their personal mobile phones. So Instagram users end up taking photos of places they visit or see rather than sharing some random online photo.

You cannot have a online social experience without photos being shared among your friends. Facebook understands that and if Instagram was part of Google+ or Twitter, it would have lost out on a big opportunity. Photos also ensure that people will not quit a service. It is like an insurance policy against your users getting tempted to move to another social platform.

What part did Google have to play in this?
There are some interesting things happening with Google over the past few months. Google has some incredibly successful products like Search, Android, YouTube, Gmail and Chrome. These products until only a few months ago seemed to be unrelated and independent.

But recently it has integrated so many of its services like Chrome app for Android, a renamed Android Market (Google Play) selling movies and books, Google+ spreading its tentacles into every Google product and search becoming more social. Also with a successful mobile OS in Android, it will have tremendous clout in a future, where more people will go online from their phones rather than a computer.

Facebook has now become defensive because to ensure a strong growth rate and also make sure Google does not take away its users. Acquiring Instagram was a wise move as it might block Instagram from Google+. Facebook will also suddenly have a lot of expertise at hand on how to build and attract a mobile only audience. That said, maybe a billion dollars was a bit too much.

IIT JEE 2012 Admission Cut Off Marks | Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Admission 2012

Overturning a five-decade-old tradition India's premier institutes, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have disclosed admission cut-offs for the first time in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) held on April 8. Over 5.6 lakh students appeared for the IIT-JEE on Sunday 8th April. The minimum qualifying mark for general category for IIT-JEE 2012 is 10%, while it is 9% for OBCs and 5% for SC, ST and physically-disabled (PD) candidates. General category students appearing for JEE need: 14 out of 136 in chemistry, physics and mathematics.

The aggregate cut-off for the general candidate is 35% or 143 out of 408 to qualify for an all India rank. Similarly, the minimum marks for OBC candidates are 13 out of 136, while it is seven out of 136 for SC/ST and PD. In addition to these minimum marks, a student will have to obtain aggregate cut-off to be eligible to be part of all India ranking. The aggregate cut-off for general category students is 35%, OBCs (31.5 %) and SC/ST/PD (17.5%).

The decision is a result of the Supreme Court's observations in a case filed by IIT-Kharagpur professor Rajeev Kumar. The court in its judgment last year had ruled that the selection process needed to be “upgraded” and “fine-tuned” year after year with periodic changes so that the selection process and examination remain relevant and meaningful. The disclosure has ensured that candidates can evaluate their performance soon after appearing for the exam.

The JEE is accepted as one of the toughest engineering examinations across the world but the process has come under fire recently. RTIs filed by Kumar on IIT-JEE revealed how the country's top technology institute has changes its examination system. In 2006 to 2011, there were varying cut-off marks for different subjects unlike the uniform pattern adopted this year. It varied from 37 in math to 55 in chemistry. In 2011, math cut-off was 34, while it was 20 for chemistry.

U.P. State Entrance Examination (UPSEE-2012)
Gautam Buddh Technical University, Lucknow is conducting State entrance examination (UPSEE-2012) on 22nd April, 2012 for admission to degree courses in Engineering (B.Tech)/B.Tech (Ag Engg)/ Pharmacy (B.Pharm)/ Architecture (B.Arch)/Hotel Management (BHMCT)/Fashion and Apparel Design (BFAD) and MBA/MCA of Govt aided and private unaided institutions affiliated to Gautam Buddh Technical University, Lucknow and Mahamaya Technical University, Noida along with some of the other State Universities of Uttar Pradesh for the academic session 2012-13

Eligibility
B.Tech / B.Tech (Ag Engg) / BHMCT / BFAD:
  • Admission to first year of Engineering (B.Tech)/B.Tech (Ag Engg)/ BHMCT/BFAD candidates must have passed intermediate examination or 10+2 level examination or its equivalent from any recognized board/university
  • The candidate must have clearly passed with minimum 45% marks for General/OBC and 40% for SC/ST candidates in aggregate
  • The candidate is essentially required to pass in each subject of the subject groups mentioned in the information brochure UPSEE-2012 without grace marks
B.Arch:
  • Admission to the first year of B.Arch, a candidate must have passed intermediate examination of Uttar Pradesh board or 10+2 level examination or its equivalent from any recognized board/university, securing minimum 50% marks in aggregate in compulsory and, optional subjects as given in information brochure of UPSEE-2012
  • A candidate possessing three year Diploma in Architecture (10+3) recognized by Central/ State Govt, securing minimum 50% marks in aggregate is also eligible for admission to the first year of B.Arch only
  • The candidates will have to appear in the entrance examination UPSEE-2012 for admission to first year of B.Arch (paper-4)
MBA:
  • Admission to the first year of MBA course, candidate must have passed bachelors degree course of minimum three year duration from any recognized university of India
  • The candidate must have clearly passed without grace marks with an aggregate of minimum 50% marks for General/OBC and 45% for SC/ST candidates
MCA:
  • Admission to the first year of MCA, candidate must have passed bachelors degree course of minimum three years duration from any recognized university with Mathematics as a subject at 10+2 level
  • The candidate must have clearly passed without grace marks with an aggregate of minimum 50% marks for General/OBC and 45% for SC/ST candidates
B.Tech (2nd year) lateral entry:
  • Admission to the second year (lateral entry) of B.Tech, the candidate must have passed three years Diploma in Engineering course; securing minimum 45% for General/OBC (40% in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category) marks in aggregate or three years B.Sc degree and passed Xllth Standard with Mathematics as one subject securing minimum 45% for General/OBC (40% in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category) marks in aggregate in B.Sc
B.Pharm (2nd year) lateral entry:
  • Admission to the second year (lateral entry) of B.Pharm, the candidate must have passed Diploma in Pharmacy course securing minimum 45% for General/OBC (40% in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category) marks in aggregate
The candidates appearing in the qualifying examination are also eligible to appear in State entrance examination-2012 subject to the condition that they must fulfill the eligibility criteria at the time of counseling

How to Apply For UPSEE 2012?
  1. OMR application form with Information Brochure can be purchased from Last week of Jan 2012 to Last week of February 2012(both days inclusive) from Head Post Offices & Mukhya Dak Ghar of Uttar Pradesh. However, the University will not be responsible if the forms are not available at any of such places mentioned above on certain date(s).
  2. The candidate can fillup the ON-Line application form, from any place through internet by log in on toupsee.nic.in/upsee/Online/makepayment.aspx From 28-02-2012 (10:00 A.M.) to 22-03-2012 (10.00: PM) as per the detailed procedure given in the websites.
  3. After submit button on the ON-Line application form, the candidate should take printout of the completed application form. The candidate should retain his/her copy and complete with photograph and signature the other copy and post the same along with bank challan duely verified by the bank for having deposited the fee as applicable as per clause 4.
  4. The Cost of application form including examination fee will be as under:
