IITs to abandon JMET Joint Management Entrance Test

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to discontinue the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) that they conduct for admitting students into postgraduate management courses.

Instead, the six IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur and Madras) will be base admissions to PG management courses on CAT, the admission test conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

Together, the six IITs have an intake capacity of about 600 students.

The reason for calling off JMET is that the number of students taking the exam has declined over the years. A source at IIT-Delhi told Minglebox.com that the resources spent on conducting the exam were unacceptably high. Also, the JMET was too similar to CAT.

The decision would make life easier for the aspirants as there will be one less test to take and their CAT score will be acceptable at more institutions.

IIT-Delhi and IIT-Madras have already announced on their website that JMET stands cancelled and students have to check individual websites of departments/schools of management for other eligibility criteria.

Facebook Buys iPad Book-Maker Push Pop Press

Facebook announced Tuesday it has acquired stealth startup Push Pop Press. Co-founded by a former Apple designer, Push Pop Press is best known for the iOS version of Al Gore’s book Our Choice.

The Our Choice app is one of the most impressive visual book experiences we’ve seen on any platform. At WWDC in June, Apple awarded the app a 2011 Apple Design Award.

As impressive as Push Pop’s technology is, a Facebook acquisition, on the surface, seems a bit strange.

When Mashable’s Adam Ostrow spoke to Push Pop’s Mike Matas at TED, the former Apple designer was enthusiastic about the way Push Pop could be used for more than just books. Perhaps that content could be extended to Facebook.

Here’s what Push Pop has to say about the acquisition:

Now we’re taking our publishing technology and everything we’ve learned and are setting off to help design the world’s largest book, Facebook.

Although Facebook isn’t planning to start publishing digital books, the ideas and technology behind Push Pop Press will be integrated with Facebook, giving people even richer ways to share their stories. With millions of people publishing to Facebook each day, we think it’s going to be a great home for Push Pop Press.”

That got us thinking about the possibilities of a Facebook app built using Push Pop technology. What if browsing through the news feed, tagging photos or watching videos could be as fluid and expressive as the Our Choice app? What if Facebook could allow brands or publishers to create their own types of Facebook Page apps? What if curated Facebook content could be released in app form?

As nice as the leaked Facebook iPad app looks, something along the lines of Our Choice could be a game changer.

What do you think about this acquisition? Let us know in the comments...

AIEEE to be Online from 2012 | CBSE makes 2012 AIEEE test Completely Online

The All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) scheduled for April 29, 2012 will be conducted entirely online.

After the CAT, which is used for admissions to MBA courses, AIEEE is the second major national entrance exam to go completely online.

The online mode was an option this year, but the majority of students opted for the pen and paper mode. Only about 5,000 of the 11.5 lakh students opted for the online test.

In spite of low response to online mode, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which conducts AIEEE, has decided to take the test online to prevent question paper leaks. This year a large number of students had to take the exam again because of the test questions leak.

Every year about 28,000 B.Tech seats and 1,000 Bachelor of Architecture seats are filled through the AIEEE.

Choosing the Right Career | Tips to Choose the Right Correct Path

Monday, August 22, 2011

Choose a job you love so you never have to work a day in your life.

Children in today's competitive world are being pushed to the limits. They are asked or even forced to choose a career which their parents like or a career which is in trend. Well i feel that this is completely not the right thing to do. Every student or a child is different and has a set of likes and dislikes different from others. So forcing a career is not the right thing to do. Children should be allowed to choose a career or their own interest. A square peg in a round hole! This what we often hear from people who choose a career they are not made for .This is happening due to the reason that many people are choosing their career under the pressure from parents and society. A right career is a proper choice, judicial selection whereby an educated youth would grow in this professional world .Yet there are other factors like social status general trend parents choice or monetary gain which decide the fate of a career selecting young man .

Young students are forced to accept a career they never liked or preferred but accepted because it was their parents' wishes and dreams .this is the reason we have many young people who are unsatisfied with their jobs. Parents have the wisdom and foresight but its use should be limited to motivating, guiding and supporting the child, absolute control over what choices children should make in life. A career should be what the child personally loves and would like to spend his life pursuing. If a child achieves success in his life, I believe that the parents would be happy other than children failing in life because the parents forced him accept a career he didn't like. I would like to ask my worthy opponents if you would like to spend your life's doing what you never liked It is disastrous to choose for a child what he do not have ability to do just because it carries a big name. It is a present trend among Indians to send their own children for engineering or medicine; as if they are they are the only two job opportunities in this present day.

Today, times have changed we are living in the 21st century we have endless job opportunities all around usfor instance just think of web designing, nanotechnology, advertising, animation etc. If the parent do not allow a child to choose a career he likes it would lead the child to failure and if by chance he succeeds he would turn into a murderous doctor who misdiagnosis patients and a bad engineer who will build buildings that will collapse like a pack of cards.

Wake up, Its time to wake up! As I said before to choose a job you love, not what your parents love so you will never have to work a day in your life.

I would like to conclude this article by quoting the words of mark twain "a man cannot be happy without his own approval".

Single entrance exam for MBA from 2013

Saturday, August 20, 2011

The All India Council for Technical Education has decided to conduct a common entrance exam – CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) for admission in MBA and PGDM programs from 2012- 2013.

While CMAT will be one of the other management exams taking place in 2012, the council wants all the colleges to admit students based on CMAT score from 2013 to reduce the pressure on students to take numerous exams. The decision to conduct all-India Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) was taken in a very recent AICTE executive council meeting.

With every college, private associations and even states holding their own entrance exam, the pressure increases on the students and the parents. To free parents and students of the emotional and financial burden, CMAT exam will be conducted and the scores will be accepted by all the AICTE approved institutes. Admission to nearly 4000 colleges offering MBA programs and 500 colleges offering PGDM program will take place on the basis of CMAT scores.

However, autonomous and independent B-schools such as IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) will continue to conduct the Common Admission Test (CAT). Individual entrance tests can also hold their individual entrance examination.

Sources reveal that AICTE is yet to work out the modalities of holding CMAT but is very keen on holding one entrance exam since they are concerned about the quality of students entering the MBA program through taking numerous entrance exams with different level of difficulties.

Highlights:
CMAT to be conducted by AICTE for admission in MBA and PGDM programs.
CMAT to be held in 2012 also, though from 2013 admission will be based only on CMAT score.
IIMs and deemed universities can hold their own entrance exams.

The launch of the GRE® revised General Test on August 1 was a significant and breakthrough change in the 60 year history of the GRE Program. The revised test has been appreciated by both business and graduate school communities.

GRE revised General Test is one of the most accessible and widely accepted graduate admission test across the world. Nearly, 700,000 students take GRE® test every year.

The GRE revised General Test has new questions and a changed score scale. The most appealing fact of the new test is more focus on questions based on real-life situations rather than the out of context vocabulary. The candidates are now enabled to utilize their own strategy for taking the test. The revised GRE is a much more technically advanced and user-friendly test designed to offer business and graduate schools reliable and accurate results up to a greater extent.
