CISCE to Introduce Bar Coding on Answersheets

Saturday, September 10, 2011

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) is set to introduce bar coding on answersheets used in ICSE board examinations from the next session to maintain anonymity of the students.

At present, students mention both their names and roll numbers on the sheets. Gerry Arathoon, additional secretary, who is presently the officiating chief executive and secretary of ICSE, was in Chandigarh on Tuesday for the third annual conference of the association of schools for Indian school certificate (ASISC), which elected office-bearers of the newly-constituted north zone.

To bring down the burden of students following Supreme Court's ruling to make environmental science a compulsory subject, the ICSE has decided to split the curriculum into parts so that students can read different sections along with other subjects. "This way, the entire environmental science syllabus is being covered but there is no additional subject," he said.

Asked about the Union minister Kapil Sibal's suggestion to allow students to evaluate their own answersheets, Arathoon said: "We maintain secrecy of the examiners and such a proposal won't prove fruitful. Though, we are yet to officially hear of the proposal."

To remove the misconception that ICSE does not prepare its students for entrance exams, Council for Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared co-curriculum under which all ASISC school boards of north region will have common syllabus for science, mathematics and commerce.

Principals of 150 ICSE affiliated schools from Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir were present on the occasion.

Principal Stanly has been elected the president and J Jacob is the vice-president of the north zone.

HPU Students Protest Cancellation of Oath Ceremony

A protest rally was organized by the newly elected student central association (SCA) in the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) on Tuesday against cancellation of oath ceremony scheduled for September 6.

All the four elected representatives of SCA including 42 elected department representatives (DR) owing alliance to SFI along with 270 students took part in the rally held to protest against the alleged dictatorial orders of vice-chancellor A D N Bajpai.

Terming the cancellation of oath ceremony as unconstitutional and undemocratic, SCA president Puneet Dhanta said, "VC is working in an authoritarian way and a notification was issued on Monday by the university regarding cancellation of oath ceremony on pretext that professor P K Ahluwalia committee constituted to investigate post poll violence in boys hostels as well as the incidence of gherao of chief warden on September 1, still has not submitted its report."

He alleged that the VC was adopting such measures to pressurize the student's body to refrain it from raising demands of students' welfare including those of lack of hostel accommodation for at least 130 students as well resist the body from raising its voice against fee hike. SCA has asked for Bajpai's resignation and sought immediate realization of their demands of providing hostel accommodation to students and withdraw decision of fee hike.

Meanwhile, SFI activists held a protest rally in front of DC office. district secretary of SFI Kapil Bhardwaj said, "The rally has been organized to expose biased attitude of police officers conducting investigations." SFI representatives met SP Shimla to acquaint him with the matter.

AU yet to allocate rooms in boys' hostels

Two months into the new academic session, the Allahabad University is yet to allocate hostel rooms to students. The reason for delay is that AU authorities have taken lot of time in ascertaining the number of vacant rooms in the hostels.

A couple of days back, the authorities declared the first list of allotment for girls' hostels. Recently, the AU had asked inmates to deposit the annual hostel fee by August 6. This was meant to filter out illegal inmates But only 25 per cent students deposited the fee.

The hostel authorities have included the names of defaulters against the vacancy in different hostels. Source at DSW office said that since the superintendents of boys' hostels have submitted the list of vacant rooms, the AU would be able to allocate the rooms in next two weeks.

The issue once again shows university's failure to evict illegal occupants. Last year, the authorities did not conduct the raids to flush out illegal hostlers. The result was that about 60 inmates enjoyed a free stay in the hostels. This also caused a huge monetary loss to the university and the hostels are still reeling under financial burden.

Dean student welfare (DSW) Prof RK Singh said, "We had given repeated notices to the hostlers to deposit the annual fee but many have not yet deposited it. However, hostlers should understand that they would be allowed to enjoy a free stay and action would be taken against defaulters."

Every year hostel superintendents prepare a list of defaulters and the illegal occupants and submit it to the university officials. This is followed by raids in hostels. These raids start in September-October and continue till December.

Now, that AU officials have the list of defaulters and illegal inmates, they can easily evict these students and make fresh allotments of rooms.

The AU authorities have got the vacancy list of all boys' hostels except the GN Jha hostel.
