AU yet to allocate rooms in boys' hostels

Two months into the new academic session, the Allahabad University is yet to allocate hostel rooms to students. The reason for delay is that AU authorities have taken lot of time in ascertaining the number of vacant rooms in the hostels.

A couple of days back, the authorities declared the first list of allotment for girls' hostels. Recently, the AU had asked inmates to deposit the annual hostel fee by August 6. This was meant to filter out illegal inmates But only 25 per cent students deposited the fee.

The hostel authorities have included the names of defaulters against the vacancy in different hostels. Source at DSW office said that since the superintendents of boys' hostels have submitted the list of vacant rooms, the AU would be able to allocate the rooms in next two weeks.

The issue once again shows university's failure to evict illegal occupants. Last year, the authorities did not conduct the raids to flush out illegal hostlers. The result was that about 60 inmates enjoyed a free stay in the hostels. This also caused a huge monetary loss to the university and the hostels are still reeling under financial burden.

Dean student welfare (DSW) Prof RK Singh said, "We had given repeated notices to the hostlers to deposit the annual fee but many have not yet deposited it. However, hostlers should understand that they would be allowed to enjoy a free stay and action would be taken against defaulters."

Every year hostel superintendents prepare a list of defaulters and the illegal occupants and submit it to the university officials. This is followed by raids in hostels. These raids start in September-October and continue till December.

Now, that AU officials have the list of defaulters and illegal inmates, they can easily evict these students and make fresh allotments of rooms.

The AU authorities have got the vacancy list of all boys' hostels except the GN Jha hostel.
