Mumbai University Postpones Exam Dates

Mumbai University has postponed all examinations — around 126 papers that were scheduled on March 28 and a similar number of papers that were scheduled on April 1 — as most college teachers are put on election duty.

Around 88,000 students from the university and its affiliated colleges will be affected as a result.

Exams were supposed to be held in 476 exam centres on Friday. While third year BA and some of the masters' exams had already begun on March 25, third year BCom exams were scheduled to start from Friday.

The university will release the revised dates soon. Most college teachers will be unavailable for supervision work on these days as the Election Commission will be holding training camps for the staff.

The Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (BUCTU) had asked the university to intervene in the matter as most teachers were assigned election duty which they thought would affect the exams.

The University Grants Commission has chosen four Jesuit colleges —

  • Loyola - Chennai
  • St Joseph's-Bangalore

  • St Xavier's-Mumbai

for the college of excellence award. The award comes with a grant of Rs 2 crore to be spent over 5 years for specific purposes.

The University Grants Commission began conferring on colleges the Potential for Excellence award about a decade ago. Two hundred of the 30,000 colleges in India were selected for this award, which included generous funding for infrastructure and educational upgradation.

St Xavier's College - Mumbai was granted this award in 2006 and has received about Rs 2.5 crore in funding over 8 years. Some months ago the UGC announced a sequel, "The College of Excellence (CE)" award.

"The UGC expert committee appreciated the progress made by us during the period of the CPE status," said St Xavier's -Mumbai principal Fr Frazer Mascarenhas. "They acknowledged the changed research profile during the last three years, with many international and national publications, an international patent, eight major and 11 minor research projects and 4 consultancy projects with industry," he added.

Some of these included the DNA fingerprinting of fish, the production of biofuel from agricultural waste, micro-organisms which cause the degradation of pesticides, the portability of water in the slums of Mumbai and the informal economy of the roadside vendor.
