UP Varsities to Formulate Common Syllabus

Twelve Uttar Pradesh universities have agreed to frame a common syllabus for at least 63 subjects taught at the graduation level in the state and decided to have a common entrance test for granting admission in PhD courses.

At a meeting chaired by vice-chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, Kanpur, H K Sehgal yesterday, vice-chancellors of the universities decided to place the proposal of common syllabus before the board of studies of their respective universities for approval by July 15, an official spokesman said today.

The syllabus of these courses will be upgraded to meet contemporary demands so as to help students get admission in postgraduate courses in different universities and transfer from one university to another.

This step will also make the process of formulating question papers and evaluation of answer sheets easier, he said.

It was decided that as per the recommendation of University Grants Commission, universities will hold subject wise separate common entrance test for admission in PhD.

It was agreed that universities should develop "Information Management System" to ensure transparency in admissions and examinations.

The vice-chancellors also decided to make use of computer technology in evaluating answer sheets and declaration of results.

The meeting was called by secretary, higher education Avnish Kumar Awasthi and attended by vice-chancellors of Agra, Bareilly, Kanpur, Jaunpur, Lucknow, Faizabad, Agra, Gorakhpur and Kashi Vidyapeeth.
